Spotted Lanternfly

An alert is currently out in many mid-Atlantic locations for the appearance of the Spotted Lanternfly (Fig 1 & 2). It is an invasive species first discovered in southeastern Pennsylvania and is quickly spreading. The Tree of Heaven is its favorite food source but it will also feed on the plant juices of grapes and hops. Controls are still being evaluated but pyrethrin products have been mentioned as a possible control. It has currently been seen as far south as Winchester, VA. If you see this pest or have further questions about it, please contact the nearest Extension Office in your area.
